Bad Ideas on Flickr

August 12th 2008 02:42
Leaping across a chasm in flip flops and camera

It's not reality TV, but it almost could be: Mighty Girl looked through prominent Flickr photos to find the ones that look like they're capturing the survival of the fittest:

Top Ten Stupid Ideas on Flickr!

Stupid Ideas are always great fodder for reality TV. We need the stupid - that's what makes reality TV so appealing.

Would you want to watch a program called 'Several hardworking businessmen do a really great job'? No - you need to see messing around, drama, failure and embarassment. It's the reason why the opening episodes of American Idol are so popular, and the same trends string through all the popular shows.

It's the worst human characteristics that we want to see.

Bad ideas are fun for us, though. I'd never sweep off an icy roof like this, but a show about it would be glorious. First one to break a rib has to leave the island!

Actually, I like the playing with fireworks photo... you always think fireworks are just kids' toys, until you light one and realize, 'Damn, this is basically a stick of gunpowder - get it away from me!'.

It's a satisfying feeling, though, when you're firing a big one. The satisfying 'thunk!', the colours, the smells.

In case you're wondering about the photo, it's not actually that bad. Snopes reports that it's a place in the Grand Canyon where people intentionally go to take ludicrous photos like this one.

Survivor Episode 3

September 29th 2006 16:52
So after all that buildup, we aren't even racially separated anymore. Sheesh. That was pretty tricky. Build up buzz and then have us all realize that none of it even mattered.

Not much action happened this week.

Biggest news is that the tribes got switched. Four team captains were picked randomly. Two women and Two men.

Each woman had to pick a woman not from their original tribe. Then each man. Then the people they picked would do the same and so on.

After four tribes were established, each team captain was given an "egg" and told to squeeze it hard. It produced either blue or red paint. Now we were down to two tribes.

Tribe Raro:
Adam
Brad
Cristina
Jenny
JP
Nate
Parvati
Rebecca
Stephannie

Team Aitu:
Becky
Candice
Cao Boi
Cecilia
Jessica
Jonathan
Ozzie
Sundra
Yul

All the items from both tribes are gathered up and split evenly.

Candice lets us know that she thinks Billy is nuts if he thinks they had something special.

New alliances are attempted to be made.

At the immunity challenge, they all get attached to a rope and have a 15lb sandbag around their necks. You can drop out but then someone else has to carry your weight. The teams start on opposites sides of a circle that is in knee deep water and then walk around until they can catch the other team and tackle them. Yul finally decides they he can take down the entire team and immediately gets his butt knocked to the ground. Team Raro wins immunity.

Raro has to send one of Aitu's members to exile island which means that person can not be voted off. They send Candice.

At the vote, it comes down to Becky and Cecilia. Cecilia loses with 5 votes to Becky's 4.

Next week, there is problems between the women and the men, namely that the women are doing all the work. Cao Boi climbs a tree and gets a baby chick. Or something. Anyway, he looks nuts.

What did you think of this episode?

Jeff Probst on the race issue

September 19th 2006 03:47
Jeff Probst says that the people behind Survivor didn't originally intend to separate tribes by race. He said that they were trying to make a more diverse cast, but they realized that the cast had strong ethnic pride.

He says he thinks they did a good job, but he's anxious to see how the public takes it.

What do you think? Was dividing the tribes by race a good idea? Will it just continue to increase racial stereotypes? Are you watching this season?
